Your auto policy will cover you and other family members on your policy, whether driving your car or someone else’s car (with their permission). Your policy also provides coverage for licensed drivers who are not listed on your policy with whom your consent to drive your car. There are several different types of auto coverage and learning about each type can help you make an informed decision about the type of coverage you need.
Liability coverage pays to repair the other driver’s car if you caused the accident. Liability coverage will also pay the other driver’s medical bills. Texas law requires you to have at least $30,000 of coverage for injuries per person, up to a total of $60,000 per accident, and $25,000 of coverage for property damage. This is called 30/60/25 coverage.
**We strongly suggest buying more than the state required for liability. In many areas of the metroplex, the average cost of one car is greater than $25,000. Imagine if you were involved in a multi car accident in Southlake with an Audi, Mercedes, and Range Rover. If you have the state minimum coverage ($25,000 of coverage for property damage), the damage to these vehicles could easily exceed this limit. The other drivers could sue you for the damages not covered by your liability insurance**
Collision coverage pays to repair or replace your car after an accident.
Comprehensive coverage pays if your car is stolen or damaged by fire, flood, vandalism or something other than a collision. Last year, one hail storm caused $300 million in damage in areas of Frisco, McKinney, and Allen according to the Insurance Council of Texas. Comprehensive coverage with a low deductible is an important part of your auto insurance in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
Medical payments coverage pays your and your passengers’ medical bills.
Personal injury protection (PIP) coverage also pays your and your passengers’ medical bills. But, unlike, medical payment coverage, it also pays for things like lost wages and other nonmedical costs. All auto policies in Texas include PIP coverage. If you don’t want it, you must tell the company in writing
Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage pays if you’re hit by someone who didn’t have insurance or didn’t have enough to pay your medical and car repair bills. It also pays if you’re in a hit-and-run accident.
Dallas County, including cities like Grapevine, Lewisville, and Coppell, has one of the highest rates of uninsured motorist in Texas. Approximately 1 in 6 drivers are driving without adequate insurance coverage.
Insurance companies must offer you this coverage. If you don’t want it, you must tell the company in writing.
